Rose Quartz - The Love Stone

The Rose Quartz, named for it's soft rose color is one of the most common forms or quartz. Ranging in color from a very pale pink to a deep reddish pink.

Rose Quartz is also referred to as Pink Quartz, Bohemian Ruby, the love stone, or the heart stone. Rose Quartz is believed to have been given as a gift of love as far back as 600 B.C.

The rose quartz was thought to attract romance and love, and to help in developing a closer bond between family and friends.

It was believed that placing rose quartz under your pillow at night would prevent nightmares. The rose quartz was thought to be a good stone to place on the stomach of pregnant women and to have in the hospital room during birth.

Rose Quartz is a calming stone. A reassuring crystal during crisis or a comforting stone during times of grief.

Considered a feminine stone, Rose Quartz is thought to balance emotions and to ease stress and anxiety. It is considered a good family stone that can restore harmony and transform difficulty into cooperation.

Also thought to raise self-esteem and self-worth, as well as being thought to heal emotional wounds.

We carry several wonderful examples of the Rose Quartz in some very unusual and unique jewelry designs at Salerno's Jewelry Store, including necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.

Incorporating the Unique Hessonite Garnet into an Unusual Jewelry Design!

Unique Turquoise and Hessonite Garnet Necklace!

Hessonite Garnet is often called “Cinnamon Stone" because of it’s similarity in color to cinnamon and it usually ranges in color from honey-yellow to orange-brown to brown-red.

When viewing Hessonite Garnet under magnification, areas of lesser transparency are seen and this is useful in distinguishing hessonite garnet from other gemstones of similar colors, such as citrine, topaz and orange zircon.

Some astrologists believe that wearing hessonite garnet will bring success and wealth, along with an increase in life span and good fortune!

At Salerno’s Jewelry Store we have the good fortune to now carry a wonderful example of Hessonite Garnet incorporated into a beautiful Hessonite Garnet and Turquoise Necklace Design that is unique in every aspect!

The History and Folklore of the Garnet

Garnet is the official birthstone for January and the designated gift for the 2nd. and 6th. wedding anniversary.

The name “garnet” comes from the Latin word “Garanatus,” meaning “seedlike,” in reference to a pomegranate since small garnets often look alot like the bright red seeds found inside in a pomegranate!

The garnet has been popular all through history, dating back to 3,000 BC. In medieval times, the stones were thought to cure depression, protect against bad dreams, and relieve diseases of the liver. Legend has it that Noah used a finely cut, glowing garnet to illuminate the ark, and in Christian tradition, the blood-red garnet is a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. Some Asiatic tribes even fashioned garnets into pellets and later into bullets believing they would be more lethal than lead!

In modern society, Garnet is just as popular as ever for it's natural beauty and hardness. It seems that when the Garnet is incorporated into jewelry, especially shiny silver, the garnet stone's rich color and beauty is enhanced even more.

At Salerno's Jewelry Store we carry a wide variety of unique jewelry designs featuring the Garnet and jewelrymandave would like to invite you to stop by and check out these exciting new genuine Garnet jewelry designs!

Are You Wearing Your Claddagh Ring Properly?

Did you know that the way in which a Claddagh ring is worn is meant to indicate your relationship status?

Claddagh Ring Meaning:

The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

The way that a Claddagh ring is worn on the hand is usually intended to convey the wearer's romantic availability, or lack thereof.

Traditionally, if the ring is on the right hand with the heart facing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, and may in fact be single and looking for a relationship: "their heart is open."

When worn on the right hand but with the heart facing inward toward the body, this indicates the person wearing the ring is in a relationship, or that "someone has captured their heart".

A Claddagh worn on the left hand ring finger facing outward away from the body generally indicates that the wearer is engaged.

When the ring is on the left hand ring finger and facing inward toward the body, it generally means that the person wearing the ring is married.

Is it Ruby or is it Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is found practically all over the world and comes in a variety of forms and colors. Although plentiful, fine Tourmaline gems are rare and fairly expensive. The tourmaline made it's way into the jewelry industry in 1876 when a rare green Tourmaline was sold to the famous Tiffany and Co.

Tourmaline is the official birthstone for the month of October and the designated gift for 8th. wedding anniversaries. The tourmaline comes in a wide variety of colors and for this reason it was believed in ancient cultures to have arrived on earth by traveling down along a rainbow!

Red Tourmaline, although normally pinker in color than rubies, was often mistaken for the ruby and it is now believed that the "rubies" in the Russian crown jewels are actually Tourmaline!

This unique stone is thought to possess more metaphysical properties than just about any other stone and it was thought to strengthen the body and spirit, offer relief from stress, promote harmony and kindness, and even relieve headaches!

Whether any of these metaphysical properties are actually true or not is left to the believers, but undoubtedly, Tourmaline is a wonderful stone when incorporated into jewelry designs and Salerno's Jewelry Store has several jewelry pieces incorporating the Tourmaline stone! Most notably is our October birthstone charm! This wonderful little charm can be placed on a light chain necklace and it's very inexpensive, so stop by and check it out today! October will be here in no time, so if there are birthdays coming up in October, now is a great time to pick up this little birthstone charm!

The Unusual Labradorite!

The Unusual Labradorite!

Labradorite was first discovered in the 1700’s in Labrador, Canada and it was thought by the Eskimos that the Northern Lights were freed by an Eskimo warrior who struck a mythical Labradorite  boulder with his mighty spear and released the light within to light up the northern sky! This myth is probably due to the fact that when light strikes the surface of Labrdaorite at a certain angle, the light is reflected back in colors similar to that of the Northern Lights.

Deposits of this unique stone have since been discovered in Russia, Finland, Greenland, Australia, Mexico, Madagascar and the United States, among other places, making it relatively inexpensive and a wonderful medium in jewelry design!

Thought to bring it’s owner good luck, strength and self-confidence, Labradorite was often placed under the pillows of believers as they slept and it is often used by healers who believe if they wear a Labradorite ring it will increase the energy emanating from their hands when healing.

Salerno’s Jewelry Store carries a wide selection of unique jewelry designs featuring the Labradorite stone, including several different rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings! We even carry a silver wrapped Labradorite and pendant and cuff links featuring Labradorite for the guys!

So stop by Salerno’s Jewelry Store today and check out these unusual jewelry designs featuring the unique Labradorite stone!

emotional balance, brotherhood and goodwill.

The Alluring Larimar Stone!

The Larimar stone is a rare blue variety of pectolite with a serene blue color
that results from the substitution of cobalt for calcium in the stone.

The color varies from white and light-blue to green-blue and deep blue or
''volcanic blue.'' With swirling bands of white, larimar mimics the wave crests
of crystal blue Caribbean waters.

This dreamy, mesmerizing gemstone is known as the ''Caribbean gemstone'' since
it is only mined in the Dominican Republic and as the "Atlantis stone" because
of the belief by some that the Dominican Republic now stands where the legendary
City of Atlantis fell.

Discovered in 1916, this unique stone wasn't mined until decades later in 1974
and all known deposits of larimar come from only one mine on earth, a remote,
mountainous location in the Dominican province of Barahonas where locals still
mine the stone from narrow crevices using primitive hand tools.

Highly sought after in the jewelry industry, this rare stone is sure to increase
in value over the years, especially if no other deposits are found.

At Salerno's Jewelry Store we carry some of the most unusual jewelry designs
featuring this alluring unique stone, so stop by and check out our gorgeous new

The Precious Blue Sapphire!

Although there is a long list of semi-precious stones, there are only 4

Greek word sappheiros which translates to "precious stone." or "blue stone."

So What Is All The Fuss About With Baltic Amber?

So What Is All The Fuss About Baltic Amber?

Baltic Amber is approximately 40 million to 60 million years old and it has been treasured by many ancient cultures for both it's protective and decorative qualities.

Commonly thought to have formed from tree sap, amber is actually created from the tissue of trees that has been exuded due to either damage to the tree or because of radical climate change thousands of years ago.

Amber is unique in the fact that it is one of the few precious substances on earth we consider to be a gem that has an organic origin, as opposed to most precious and semi-precious gemstones that originate from a mineral.

For this reason, the amber stone will actually burn when thrown into a hot fire and it exudes a resinous smell and aromatic smoke! When rubbed vigorously, small light objects will actually be attracted to amber as if by magic!

For all these reasons, along with it's natural beauty, amber continues to be used widely in jewelry designs to this day, and jewelrymandave has added a huge selection of exciting jewelry designs featuring the unique amber stone at Salerno's Jewelry Store, so stop by today and check out the fascinating world of amber jewelry!

The History of the Peridot Stone!

Peridot is a gemstone with a fascinating history. It is one of the oldest known gemstones and there are ancient written records documenting the mining of peridot as early as 1500 B.C. It is a gem especially connected with ancient Egypt, and some historians believe that the famous emeralds of Cleopatra were actually peridots!

Peridot's history is different from that of almost all other gems. While most gems are formed in the earth's crust, only the peridot and diamonds are formed much deeper in the earth's mantle.

Peridot was first used a talisman in the ancient world and it has a long standing mystical reputation. It has been thought to have the power of warding off anxiety, making men more articulate and promoting success in relationships and marriage.
